Mobile Battery and Alternator Replacement

A dead battery and a dead alternator feel identical from the driver's seat, so both get tested before either gets replaced and you do not pay for a good part.

At a Glance

  • Battery, alternator, cables and belt all checked together
  • New battery fitted at your home or your work
  • Charging output measured with the engine running
  • Old battery taken away and recycled

The Part That Failed Is Not Always the Part That Died

A battery that keeps going flat is often a healthy battery being drained by a charging system that stopped charging. Replace the battery and the car runs for a few days, then dies again in a worse place than the first time.

So the test covers the whole loop. Battery under load, alternator output at idle and at speed, the belt that drives it, and the cable ends at both ends.

Warning Lights That Mean Charging

A red battery symbol on the dash almost never means the battery. It means the car is running on stored power and not making any more. How far you get after that light comes on depends on what else is switched on, and headlights at night will shorten it a lot.

If that light is on right now, pull over somewhere safe and call. Driving it home is how a battery job becomes a tow.

Belts, Because They Drive All of It

One belt turns the alternator, the water pump and the power steering on most cars. When it goes, the charge light and the temperature gauge come up together and the steering goes heavy in the same minute. It looks like three failures. It is one.

David replaced an alternator belt for a customer in Nacogdoches this summer. That review is on this site.

Battery warranty, student
He was overall just extremely nice and got me out of a bind the day before move out when my car was broke down! He heard that id only have a day to get it fixed and immediately found a good time for him to do it. Not even that, he also went out of his way to help when he didn't need to. He saw that the people before him sold me an old battery and went up there himself and used the warranty on it to get me a new one.

Questions

Questions About Battery and Charging

Do you bring the battery with you?

Yes, once the size and type are known. That is part of what the call before the visit is for.

Can you test my alternator without taking it off?

Yes. Output is measured on the car with the engine running, which is the only place the reading means anything.

What happens to my old battery?

It goes with him and gets recycled. You do not have to deal with it.
