Overheating, Thermostats and Water Pumps

Overheating Repair, Thermostats and Water Pumps

An East Texas summer finds every weak cooling part you own, and an engine that overheats twice is a much more expensive engine than one that overheats once.

At a Glance

  • Thermostats, water pumps, radiators, hoses and heaters
  • Leak found first, then the system refilled and bled properly
  • Heat that blows cold in winter is usually the same system
  • Come out to you rather than risking the drive in

Pull Over. It Is Cheaper Than the Alternative

A temperature gauge climbing into the red is the one warning on your dash worth stopping for immediately. Heads warp, gaskets go, and a cooling repair turns into an engine repair in the space of a few miles.

That is exactly the kind of call a mobile mechanic is for. The car does not have to survive a drive to a shop before it can be looked at.

Small Part, Big Consequence

A thermostat stuck shut will cook an engine that has nothing else wrong with it. A water pump can leak for weeks and then seize in a minute. A cap that will not hold pressure lets coolant boil at a temperature it should have handled easily.

None of those are big parts. All of them are cheap next to what they damage when they are ignored.

No Heat in Winter Is a Cooling Fault

If the vents blow cold in January the problem is almost never the heater controls. It is coolant level, a thermostat stuck open or a blocked heater core, which are all parts of the same system that keeps the engine from overheating in July.

Fixing it in the winter is also how you find out about the water pump before the first hot week in June.

Questions

Questions About Cooling and Heating

My car is overheating right now. Should I drive it to you?

No. Stop somewhere safe, switch it off and call. Driving an overheating engine is how a small repair becomes a big one.

Can you fix a leak without the car going on a lift?

Most cooling leaks are reachable from above or from under the front of the car on jack stands, which is how these jobs get done on a driveway.

Do you do radiators?

Yes, radiators, hoses, thermostats, water pumps and heater faults.
