Check Engine Light Diagnosis at Your Door

A trouble code tells you which part of the engine is unhappy and never tells you which part failed, so the code is where a real diagnosis starts rather than where it ends.

At a Glance

  • Codes read on the car, not guessed from the dash
  • You get told what the code means in plain words
  • Tested down to the actual failed part
  • Scanned again after the repair to confirm it stayed gone

A Free Code Read Is Not a Diagnosis

A parts counter will read your code for nothing and hand you a part number. That number is a guess. A misfire code names the cylinder and stays silent about whether the cause was a coil, a plug, an injector or a vacuum leak, and those four repairs are not the same price.

What you are paying a mechanic for is the part after the code. The testing that turns one cylinder into one cause.

Why It Gets Scanned Twice

Codes come in three flavors. Current, pending and permanent. A permanent code will not clear just because the fault was fixed, and a pending one can point at the next failure before you feel it.

So the car is scanned before the work and again after, and you hear what changed. Clearing a light is not the same thing as fixing a car, and a light that comes back a week later helps nobody.

Symptoms Without a Light

Plenty of real faults never light the dash. A car that idles rough, hesitates pulling out, or runs fine cold and badly hot can have a clean scan. Those get diagnosed by driving it and testing it, not by waiting for a code.

One customer had already ruled out her battery herself before she called. David went through the whole car that evening, found it, and then spent extra time explaining what he had done and why. Her review is on this site in full.

No start diagnosis
David is very professional, fair, and knowledgeable! I don't ever leave views about stuff but I feel like this guy deserves one ! I called him in complete panic, I had been turned down by every shop I had called in nac due to being so busy or it was out of their expertise. My car was not staring and doing weird things ! I had already ruled out the battery ! He was able to come to my location later that evening and completely looked over my car , trying to problem solve my issue ! By the end my car was starting and running ! He also spent extra time and educated us what he was doing and why and gave us pointers !

Questions About Diagnostics

Is there a charge just to diagnose it?

Diagnosis is real work and it is charged as work. You will be told what it costs on the phone before he drives out, and nothing beyond that happens without you agreeing to it.

My light is flashing. Is that different?

Yes. A flashing check engine light means a misfire bad enough to damage the catalytic converter. Stop driving it and call.

Can you clear the code for me?

Codes get cleared after the fault is fixed, not instead of fixing it.
