Timing Belt Replacement

Timing Belt Replacement at Your Location

A timing belt is the one part on your car where doing it early costs a fraction of doing it late, because on most engines the belt breaking is what destroys the engine.

At a Glance

  • Replaced on the manufacturer's schedule, not after it fails
  • Water pump and tensioner usually done at the same time
  • Done at your home or your work, not booked into a shop for days
  • You get told if your engine uses a chain instead

Why This One Is Not Optional

The timing belt keeps the top of the engine turning in step with the bottom. On most engines built in the last thirty years there is not enough room for both to be wrong at once. When the belt snaps, the valves and the pistons arrive in the same place, and the repair after that is an engine.

There is no warning noise and no dash light. It is a mileage part and a time part, and the only way to stay ahead of it is the schedule.

Doing the Water Pump at the Same Time

On a lot of engines the water pump sits behind the timing belt and is driven by it. Getting to one means getting to the other, so replacing both together costs a part and saves the whole job twice.

If yours is built that way you will be told, and you can decide. It is your money and it should be your call.

Belt or Chain

Plenty of engines use a timing chain instead, and a chain is designed to last the life of the engine. If yours has one, the honest answer is that you do not need this service, and that is the answer you will get.

Knowing which one you have is the first question, and it takes a year, make and engine size to answer.

Warning Signs

  • The car is old enough that age alone is the reason
  • No record of it ever having been done
  • You just bought a used car with unknown history
  • A rattle from the front of the engine on start up
  • Oil leaking near the front timing cover
